Patten Free Library in Bath is one of eight sites chosen by the JCL Foundation and Maine Humanities Council to host “Maine Reads,” a two-session reading group and facilitated discussion. This year’s selection is Dave Eggers’ What Is the What: The Autobiography of Valentino Achak Deng. The book is based on the experiences of Achak Deng, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan who survived the genocide and made his way to America. Together, he and Eggers produced a very moving book that, despite the difficulty of the subject matter, is surprisingly compelling and readable. The JCL Foundation is providing 15 copies of the book to PFL and is paying the costs for the speaker and facilitator. Dr. Robert Moyer of North Yarmouth has purchased the copies of What Is the What. Upon conclusion of the reading groups, the books will be donated to 30 Maine libraries for their collections.
The library’s monthly book group has chosen the title for their regular meeting on Wednesday, February 12 at 6:30pm. In addition, Susan Beegel will facilitate a discussion on Wednesday, February 26 at 6:30pm. Both events are free and open to the public. Come to one or both sessions. Copies of the book are available at the information desk in the library and at many other Minerva libraries through the interlibrary loan network.
For the final component of the program, the library will host a survivor of the genocide in Sudan now living in Maine who will talk about his or her personal experiences.
