Bath's Urban Forest

A Picture Postcard Tour

This publication was made possible by Bath's Community Forestry Committee volunteers and a grant from America The Beautiful, a nationwide, federally funded program, administered here through the Maine Forest Service. This grant calls for cooperation between public and private sectors toward a shared goal of forest improvement and increasing awareness of the importance of trees and the urban forest. The first 1000 books will be distributed without cost to Bath citizens.

An Introduction to Bath's Urban Forest

Trees that line Front Street, trees that beautify Library Park and Waterfront Park, trees that provide picturesque settings for our cemetaries, schools, public and private properties are known as the urban forest. Unlike the "typical" forest we picture in our mind's eye when we hear the word "forest", these trees co-exist with buildings, asphalt, cars, and human beings. Trees are working twenty-four hours a day improving our quality of life.

This collection of images takes you on a picture tour of Bath's urban forest. It shows the many benefits we receive and the importance of preserving and maintaining this valuable asset.

Caring for the Urban Forest

Trees live longer and grow better if we help them. The urban forest belongs to us. We are responsible for its renewal and maintenance. Caring for trees can make a difference in the quality of our lives.

What can be done?

  1. Start a new life cycle; plant a tree.
  2. Volunteer for a community tree project.
  3. Give a donation to the Bath Community Forestry Trust Fund.
  4. Take a self-guided tour. Be aware of our urban forest.
