Fuel for Friends

Fuel for Friends,” a collaborative project organized by Regional School Unit 1 and the City of Bath to raise money for heating assistance for people who cannot afford fuel. The goal is to raise emergency support money and distribute it to people in need.

Money for “Fuel for Friends” will be donated by individuals and businesses, and channeled to residents through Midcoast Maine Community Action (formerly CED). Midcoast Maine Community Action will distribute the funds according to guidelines that will enhance other programs, such as LIHEAP.

The funds will be dedicated to purchasing heating fuel for residents in the towns of Bath, West Bath, Phippsburg, Woolwich, Arrowsic, and Georgetown.

Fuel for Friends FAQ:

What is Fuel for Friends?
A program to help families in need purchase fuel to heat their homes.

How does it work?
Individuals and businesses will donate to the Fuel for Friends Fund. The fund is managed by Midcoast Maine Community Action. MMCA will talk with residents in need to see if they qualify for the funds.

Who can receive funds?
The funds are only used for purchasing fuel and only for residents in the designated area – Bath, West Bath, Phippsburg, Woolwich, Arrowsic, and Georgetown. MMCA will determine guidelines with help from the Fuel for Friends steering committee to decide who is eligible for funds. You must apply through Midcoast Maine Community Action. You can call them at 442-7963.

Is there any program duplication?
Right now there is no designated fund for fuel in our area. The Fuel for Friends fund is dedicated to fuel purchases and will be available to a wider range of income levels in the designated area. Other agencies, like United Way and LIHEAP provide funds for weatherization and smaller amounts of more restricted heating assistance.  Corporal Works of Mercy runs the Warm Thy Neighbor program through MMCA, which covers parts of Cumberland and northern Sagadahoc County, but not Greater Bath.

How do I donate?
You can send a check made out to “Fuel for Friends” to: Fuel For Friends, c/o Midcoast Maine Community Action, 34 Wing Farm Parkway, Bath, Maine 04530.

Pre-addressed donation envelopes are available at Bath City Hall and participating businesses and churches.  If you would like a stack of donation envelopes for your business, church, or employee lounge, please pick them up in the Bath City Manager's office. Additional fundraising is very welcome.
