Bath Citizen Involvement Day 2009
Saturday, October 10

What is Bath Citizen Involvement Day?
Every year, the City of Bath and the Bath Community Development Office host Bath Citizen Involvement Day, now in its 11th year. Citizen Involvement Day is a celebration that offers non-profit organizations with programs that benefit Bath a chance to display their information to the public and get volunteers, and allows citizens to visit with participating organizations and learn about the great things they do.

Awards are presented for Citizen of the Year, Community Spirit, Project of the Year, Youth, and the Lifetime Spirit.

Citizen Involvement Day is part of Bath's Autumnfest which offers many children's activites, a craft show, merchant open houses, antique fire truck and trolley rides, and much more.

This year live music was provided by The Rain Men—Fun favorites
(new and old) with award-winning guitarist Jud Caswell and multi-percussionist Rob Duquette.

Tony “Zumba” Garreton got us moving to Bath’s favorite Latin exercise music.

2009 Citizen Involvement Day Awards

Project of the Year: Help-A-Kid
The Help-A-Kid program provides after school activities to more than 250 community kids who would otherwise go home to empty houses or might not be able to afford the many opportunities that Help-A-Kid provides, such as, karate lessons, YMCA swim programs, skate park, camps, gymnastics, fishing & outing clubs, kayaking, music lessons, pottery lessons, skiing, horseback riding, bowling, and many others. The participants of this truly one-of-a-kind program have demonstrated increased interest in school subjects; are missing fewer school days; and serve fewer detention sessions. The Help-A-Kid program has helped double the number of participants on the honor roll. The Bath community is lucky to have this program and its many dedicated volunteers.

Community Spirit Award: Robert Jordan
Bob Jordan has contributed many hours to The Park and its components--the teen center, the theatre and the skating area--to assure there is a safe nuturing place for kids to go after school and on weekends. He is also a well loved history teacher at Morse High School. The City of Bath thanks Bob for the generous gift of his time and expertise, as well as his committment to our City and its youth.

Youth Award: Kean McDermott
Kean McDermott is a scholar, athlete, leader, engaged citizen, loving son, devoted brother and compassionate neighbor. He is a class officer, member of the Model UN, a top tri-athlete, active at the Chocolate Church, and the student representative on both the Bath Planning Board and RSU1 School Board. Kean defines "citizen involvement" and leads by example, and the City of Bath is proud to recognize him for his commitment to our community.
(Kean was taking his SATs during the awards ceremony)

Citizen of the Year: Evelyn "Evie" Smith
Evie Smith is a dedicated citizen volunteer. As a volunteer with the Bath Soup Kitchen, she is exceptionally generous with her time and always ready to step in when help is needed. She inspires others to work harder and can always be counted on. When not in the Soup Kitchen, Evie can be found helping out at area nursing homes or knitting mittens for Bath children which she donates to schools at Christmastime. In all capacities, she is kind and caring, encouraging and supportive, enthusiastic, dependable, and always has time to help someone. The City of Bath thanks Evie for her time and commitment to our community.
